Thailand retirement ranking tops Asia in 2026
Thailand has been ranked the best country in Asia for retirement in 2026 and ninth globally, according to International Living’s latest Global Retirement Index.
The 2026 index, now in its 35th year, gave Thailand an overall score of 80.0, placing it among the world’s top retirement destinations. The ranking assessed countries across seven categories: climate, housing, cost of living, healthcare, visas and benefits for retirees, development and governance, and overall suitability for daily life.
Deputy Government Spokesperson Lalida Periswiwattana said on 1 July that the result reflected Thailand’s appeal to foreign retirees, particularly in terms of value for money, healthcare and long-term living conditions.
Thailand scored especially strongly for cost of living, receiving 96 points in the category. The score reflects the country’s relative affordability compared with the quality of life available to residents.
The country also received 84 points for development and governance, while healthcare and visas and benefits for retirees each received 79 points.
The government said the ranking was in line with its policy to promote Thailand as a Medical and Wellness Hub, with a focus on healthcare services, wellness tourism, high-value medical treatment and elderly care.
Officials said the government would continue improving public health services and infrastructure to support both Thai residents and foreigners living in the country.
The ranking comes as Thailand continues to promote itself as a long-stay destination for retirees, supported by its healthcare sector, transport links, cost of living and range of lifestyle options.
