Rare serow spotted during community hike in Khao Tao
A rare serow sighting in Hua Hin was recorded on Saturday, 12 September, when hikers spotted the animal on a hillside overlooking Sai Noi Beach in Khao Tao.
The animal was seen at about 8.30am by a group taking part in a Why Hua Hin community hike organised by Hua Hin Today and Hua Hin Trail Runners. Wildlife officials described the encounter as very rare for the location.
Hua Hin Today contacted officials at Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, where serows have previously been recorded, to report the sighting. A spokesperson for the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation confirmed that the animal in the photograph was a serow.
“You were very lucky to see one at Khao Tao, as serows usually live around quiet, undisturbed limestone cliffs,” the spokesperson told Hua Hin Today.
The spokesperson suggested the animal may have extended its search for food into the area.
A previous serow sighting in Khao Tao was reported in April 2022, when wildlife officials rescued an unwell animal near the approach to Hat Sai Yai Palace. It was taken to Huai Sai Wildlife Breeding Station for treatment.
Known in Thai as liang pha, serows are wild, goat-like mammals related to goats and sheep. They have coarse, dark fur, large ears and short horns that curve slightly backwards. Both males and females have horns.
They are skilled climbers that feed on leaves and twigs. They usually live alone and are wary of disturbance, making them difficult to spot.
The mainland serow (Capricornis sumatraensis) is classified as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species. Its population is declining, with hunting, snaring and habitat loss among the main threats.
Serows are also designated reserved wild animals under Thai law, giving them special legal protection.
Officials encouraged members of the public to report wildlife sightings and follow advice from park staff.
Anyone encountering a serow or other wild animal should keep a safe distance, avoid loud noises and refrain from disturbing its natural behaviour.
