Cha-am Beach is preparing to host its annual Shellfish Eating and Squid Fishing Festival, scheduled to take place from 14-21 September 2024 at the Cha-am Beach Viewpoint.
The festival is a significant event for the region, offering both a culinary and cultural experience that highlights the area’s rich marine resources.
The timing coincides with the peak period for squid fishing, as September and October see an increase in the availability of seafood, particularly squid. During this period, many local fishermen venture out to sea to capitalise on the abundant catch.
In response to this natural abundance, both government and private sectors have collaborated to organise this yearly festival, which has become a staple in the local calendar.
Visitors to the event can look forward to a wide array of seafood dishes, with more than 50 vendors participating. These include prominent hotels and restaurants from across Cha-am District and Phetchaburi Province, all offering dishes that prominently feature squid and shellfish.
Phetchaburi is known as the City of Gastronomy, and the festival’s offerings are expected to reflect this reputation. The organisers have also ensured that prices remain affordable, making the event accessible to a broad audience.
Beyond the food, the festival will feature nightly musical performances by well-known bands, adding to the festive atmosphere. Additionally, a walking street will be set up, with stalls showcasing local products, giving visitors a taste of the region’s cultural heritage.
A key attraction of the festival is the opportunity for tourists to participate in squid fishing trips, providing a hands-on experience of the local fishing traditions.
The Shellfish Eating and Squid Fishing Festival is expected to draw significant crowds, both from within the region and from further afield, eager to enjoy the best of what Cha-am’s coastline has to offer.
