Pranburi Dam offers sunset views and weekend escapes
Pranburi Dam, located just outside Hua Hin, has become a popular spot for people seeking a scenic escape. Known for its panoramic reservoir views and striking sunsets, the dam provides a relaxing setting for day trips, picnics, and photography.
Built across the Pranburi River in Ban Wang Won Irrigation, the dam was completed in 1982 to store water and reduce flooding during the rainy season. At the time, local farmland and transport routes were often damaged by seasonal floods, while the dry months brought severe shortages. The reservoir created by the dam now plays an important role in water management throughout the region.
The dam crest measures 1,500 metres long, 8 metres wide, and 42 metres high. Its vast expanse of water framed by surrounding mountains gives visitors a sense of space and calm, making it a favourite destination for those looking to unwind.
Highlights for visitors
While the reservoir serves a practical purpose, it has also developed into a leisure spot. The area attracts anglers who take advantage of the rich fishing opportunities, and families often come for picnics by the water’s edge.
The main draw, however, is the sunset. As the sun sets behind the mountain ridges, the sky turns golden, casting reflections across the water and creating a view that many visitors call unforgettable.
How to get there
Pranburi Dam is about 19 kilometres from Phetkasem Road. At kilometre marker 258, opposite the Pranburi Water Delivery and Maintenance Project, turn left onto the paved road and follow it directly to the dam.
