In previous articles, I have covered some of the fantastic reasons we love living in Hua Hin and Thailand’s tropical climate: the food, the people, and the lifestyle.
But let’s be honest—the main attraction is the sunny, hot weather. In Thailand, we can enjoy a healthy, outdoor lifestyle all year round.
We can eat outdoors, swim, exercise daily, and generally benefit from the consistently high temperatures. The quality of construction in Hua Hin is undoubtedly on the rise, and we now have some excellent specifications that further enhance our quality of life. This month, I’d like to highlight some of the ways we at Thai Country Homes optimise villas for the Thai climate.
Solar and Eco Solutions
With so much sunshine, it makes perfect sense to install solar panels. At our new project, Mountainside, we include 5 kW of solar panels with a 10 kW inverter (plus an extra 5 kW of solar free of charge for readers of Hua Hin Today). With high-quality double-glazed doors and windows installed by local company SSS, extra ceiling insulation, eco pool pumps, Q-Con superblocks, and inverter air-conditioning units, the villas are designed to maximise the benefits of the sun’s rays, enhance insulation, and minimise energy usage.
Pests
Of course, there are pros and cons to living anywhere, and one common concern from clients is bugs and mosquitoes. Some people seem more susceptible to insect bites than others, which is why the terrace freedom screens fitted in the show house have been so popular. These high-quality screens keep bugs and pests off the terrace while still allowing cooling breezes to flow through the property—something we get a lot of at the new location.
We also install fly screens on all doors and windows as standard. Additionally, underground pest control systems are included in every villa, providing highly effective protection against termites and other ground pests, such as cockroaches.
Rainy Season
We’ve experienced significant rainfall over the past couple of months, which is excellent for filling up reservoirs but can cause problems if not planned for. Our new site has an excellent rainwater drainage system, which was fully tested recently and performed optimally.
Equally, we have a long dry season, which is why every villa comes with 17,000-litre underground water tanks and automated sprinkler systems as standard.
A Few Extra Specs Worth Mentioning
My wife and I have been through the process of designing and specifying our own villa, including choosing the kitchen, fitted furniture, and tiles. This experience positions me well to advise others on optimising their homes.
Last Christmas, a car crashed into the electric pylons near our house. We were without power for several hours, and when the electricity came back on, the surge caused our fridge to break. It was inconvenient, to say the least.
In our new villas, we now include a UPS battery backup system as standard to safeguard against power cuts and an electrical surge protector to protect appliances from potential damage.
We are also offering a central air purification system, which will be especially beneficial during the months when farmers burn fields in the region.
If you’d like to visit me at the new site, please get in touch—I look forward to meeting you.
