The mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul has met with officials and local people to consider the building of a pedestrian overpass in front of Hua Hin Market Village shopping mall.
The General Manager of Hua Hin Market Village, Mr. Amornthep Aummeephien and the staff of the shopping mall provided information about the need and possibilities which may see the building of the new overpass. The current dangers posed for pedestrians crossing the road in this location are apparent with a number of serious incidents being reported. Apart from the density of the traffic and passengers disembarking from public transport vehicles, hazards also relate to vehicles attempting to make U-turns with the uncertainty created by nearby temporary lane markings. Another hazard relates to driver behaviour at pedestrian crossings.
Courteous drivers who have stopped to give way to pedestrians on the crossing have reported near misses as vehicles in other lanes do not stop or reduce their speed. This has meant that pedestrians stepping past a stopped vehicle become vulnerable to those who do not recognise the crossing. In more recent times, traffic controllers have been deployed to avert this danger outside Market Village. This is a concern at a number of other locations on Petchakasim Road with fading road markings adding to the problem.
