The Phetchaburi governor has led by example by wearing traditional Thai dress while on duty, encouraging residents and visitors to don period-style clothing for the 39th Phra Nakhon Khiri Festival later this year.

On Tuesday, Pol. Lt. Col. Phopchanok Chalanukroh, Governor of Phetchaburi, appeared at work alongside senior provincial officials dressed in traditional attire, including chong kraben trousers and sabai shawls. The gesture was intended to promote Thai fabrics and invite the public to take part in the 39th Phra Nakhon Khiri–Mueang Phet Festival, scheduled to run from 20 February to 1 March 2026.

The governor said the initiative reflects Phetchaburi’s long-standing historical links to the Thai monarchy and its identity as the “City of Three Palaces”. The title refers to Phra Nakhon Khiri, Phra Ram Ratchaniwet (Ban Puen Palace) and Wang Ban Puen, all of which are closely associated with the province’s cultural heritage.

Encouraging cultural identity through everyday dress

Provincial authorities have agreed that this year’s Phra Nakhon Khiri Festival should place a stronger emphasis on traditional dress as a way of reinforcing local identity and encouraging wider participation. Officials are being encouraged to wear chong kraben trousers during normal working days, except when formal uniforms are required.

According to the governor, the move is designed to normalise traditional clothing in everyday life rather than reserving it solely for ceremonial occasions. He said leadership should start with government agencies, helping to create a working environment that reflects local culture and traditions.

The governor also extended the invitation beyond the public sector, calling on private businesses, residents and tourists to join in by wearing Thai fabrics, chong kraben trousers and sabai shawls when attending festival events. He said this would help showcase Phetchaburi’s cultural character while adding colour and atmosphere to the annual celebration.

The Phra Nakhon Khiri–Mueang Phet Festival is one of the province’s most prominent cultural events, drawing large crowds each year to activities centred around Khao Wang and the surrounding historic areas. Organisers expect the renewed focus on traditional dress to enhance the overall experience for both locals and visitors.
