Kaeng Krachan National Park has seen a rare flurry of black leopard sightings in recent weeks, with park rangers and visitors catching glimpses of the elusive predator near Phanoen Thung.
On 25 July, a ranger stationed near on the mountain road to Phanoen Thung observed a black leopard walking calmly by the roadside. The animal even climbed onto a log, offering a clear view before disappearing back into the forest.
According to Mr Mongkhon Chaiphakdi, Chief of Kaeng Krachan National Park, the leopard’s relaxed behaviour indicated it was undisturbed by human presence.
The sighting follows an earlier encounter on 15 July, when Hua Hin Today reader John Stacf filmed this video of a black leopard walking past his vehicle inside the park. The video shows the animal moving slowly and confidently, apparently unbothered by people nearby.
The sightings occurred in an area located about 1 hour and 20 minutes’ drive from Hua Hin, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and wildlife photographers. Kaeng Krachan is Thailand’s largest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage site, known for its rich biodiversity and one of the few places in the country where black leopards are still found in the wild.
Officials remind visitors to respect wildlife and park regulations
While the recent encounters are encouraging signs for the park’s ecosystem, officials are reminding visitors to act responsibly. Mr Mongkhon stressed the importance of keeping a safe distance from wildlife and avoiding any actions that might disturb the animals.
Drivers are advised to slow down if they spot wildlife and avoid using loud noises to get their attention. Feeding wild animals is strictly prohibited, as it can alter their natural behaviour and pose risks to both animals and people.
Park officials hope the sightings will raise awareness about the importance of conservation and responsible tourism in protected areas like Kaeng Krachan.
