Community tourism in Thap Sakae showcases fishing and coconut culture

Community tourism in Thap Sakae is giving visitors the chance to experience local life first-hand through a new route developed by the Ban Thung Pradu Community Tourism Enterprise. The programme, organised in collaboration with Rajamangala University of Technology Rattanakosin, highlights the fishing and coconut-based livelihoods of three local communities.

The trial route, titled “Two Ways Linking Three Communities”, was launched on 17 August and brought together local leaders, government officials, academics, and tourism operators. The initiative connects Ban Nong Nam Khao, Ban Thung Pradu, and Hat Thap Sakae, showcasing how community-based tourism can promote sustainable development.

The experience began at Ban Nong Nam Khao, where participants received an “adventure bag” before visiting the village shrine and learning about its history. Guests then joined the local fishing group to hear about marine conservation, take part in making artificial reefs, and try squid-catching techniques using shells known as kung king.

A hands-on look at local life

At Wat Thung Pradu, participants explored the temple’s heritage before enjoying lunch at Baan Suan Wittaya. The meal featured special creations such as Kapi Long Thara (shrimp paste), Song Sai Yai San Sampan (woven connection), and Nali Kloi Kaew (glass jelly). Visitors also joined in a dessert-making activity, preparing the local sweet nok khum hom rak (“quail wrapped in love”), while learning about the district’s coconut culture.

Later, the group visited a seafood processing community in Thap Sakae to see local production methods and sample products, with stir-fried squid with shrimp paste in a jar proving a popular souvenir.

Organisers gathered feedback from participants to refine the project, with the aim of further developing community-led tourism in the district. Those interested in the route can contact the Ban Thung Pradu Community Tourism Enterprise on 081-5729665.
