Police in Prachuap Khiri Khan seized more than 1 million methamphetamine pills, worth an estimated 50 million baht, after a car carrying the drugs was involved in a crash early on 24 May.
Pol Col Paitoon Promkhian, superintendent of Mueang Prachuap Khiri Khan Police Station, led the seizure together with senior officers and investigators from the station.
Police said they seized approximately 1,060,000 methamphetamine pills from a red Toyota Yaris with Bangkok licence plates. The vehicle was found after officers were called to a collision on the southbound side of Phetkasem Road, about 50 metres past the Thai Namthip branch in Ao Noi subdistrict.
Officers were alerted to the incident at around 1.10am. At the scene, they found a bronze-silver car with Prachuap Khiri Khan licence plates that had been damaged after being hit from behind by the red Toyota Yaris.
The driver of the bronze-silver car, identified only as Mr A, told police his vehicle had first been hit near the Tipco factory. He said the driver of the Yaris did not stop and instead drove away.
Mr A followed the vehicle and caught up with it near the scene of the reported collision. He told police the driver of the Yaris was a man aged around 30, thin, and about 165cm tall.
The man allegedly told Mr A not to report the crash to police and said he would pay for the damage. A short time later, he ran into roadside scrubland and disappeared into the darkness.
During a search of the red Toyota Yaris, police found 160 bundles of methamphetamine pills hidden inside seven black plastic bags in the boot.
The drugs and the vehicle were seized as evidence.
Police reported the case to Pol Maj Gen Athorn Chinthong, commander of Prachuap Khiri Khan Provincial Police, who ordered officers to urgently track down the suspect and others believed to be connected to the case.
