Two motorcycle taxi drivers have been arrested following an incident in which raw eggs were thrown at a Grab car picking up passengers outside Hua Hin Railway Station.
The incident occurred at approximately 7 p.m. on 17 April, when a Mauritian female tourist, visiting Hua Hin with her husband, arranged for a Grab car to collect them from the station. As the couple were about to board the vehicle, raw eggs were thrown at the car, splattering their clothes and causing distress.
The tourist later shared details of the incident in the “Life in Huahin” Facebook group, where her post quickly gained attention. The incident sparked widespread criticism on social media, with many users expressing concern over its potential impact on Hua Hin’s image as a tourist destination.
Following the post, Pol. Col. Kampanat Na Wichai, Superintendent of Hua Hin Police Station, launched an investigation. CCTV footage from the area was reviewed and linked to two other similar incidents reported between 12 and 17 April. Police later arrested two suspects, both motorcycle taxi drivers.
The investigation revealed that the motive stemmed from accumulated stress and frustration. The suspects admitted to throwing eggs after experiencing a significant drop in income over the past three to four months, during which they said Grab cars had increasingly picked up passengers they considered potential customers. They insisted they did not intend to harm tourists or damage Hua Hin’s reputation.
The suspects were handed over to investigators, with police confirming that legal proceedings are underway and evidence has been collected.
The couple later posted a follow-up message thanking local authorities and residents: “We sincerely thank the people of Hua Hin and all tourists for their encouragement after yesterday’s egg-throwing incident. The police professionally brought us to meet the perpetrators for questioning. We commend the officers and Sunday who tirelessly worked alongside Thai police.”
The female tourist, who is a teacher, added: “The perpetrator is a youth from an impoverished family. As a teacher who works with young people, I understand the stress and pressure they face, so we requested the police merely issue a warning to prevent such incidents from happening to other tourists. Thai people are hardworking, which is why we return to Thailand two to three times annually. We love the ‘Land of Smiles’ and love Hua Hin even more today.”
