Police have identified the person responsible for posting a shooting threat involving a well-known school in Mueang Prachuap Khiri Khan, after the message prompted heightened security and one day of online learning.
The Prachuap school shooting threat was posted in a parents’ LINE group and stated that there would be a mass shooting the following day, causing concern among parents and school staff.
On Friday, 14 August, Pol Maj Gen Athorn Chinthong, Commander of Prachuap Khiri Khan Provincial Police, ordered 20 police officers and six Territorial Defence Volunteers to patrol the area around the school.
The 26 personnel were deployed to monitor suspicious activity and provide additional security for students, teachers and other staff.
School moves classes online
As a precaution, the school moved classes online for one day while authorities assessed the situation.
Teachers were instructed to provide students and parents with details on how to access lessons through the school’s usual communication channels.
Police also began a technological investigation to trace the source of the threatening message.
Police identify person responsible
In a later update on Friday, police confirmed they had identified the person responsible for posting the threat.
Authorities said the individual admitted to sending the message and was being questioned as investigators worked to establish the circumstances and motive behind it.
Police were also coordinating with the school as the investigation continued.
Authorities said security measures would continue to be put in place where necessary at schools across Prachuap Khiri Khan province.
