Prachuap Khiri Khan provincial authorities held a meeting on 10 February to discuss water safety and measures to prevent tourist accidents, following the recent deaths of two tourists in separate water sports incidents in Hua Hin and Khao Kalok.
Deputy Governor Preeda Sookjai chaired the meeting, which was attended by representatives from various government agencies. The discussions took place in the Singkhon Room on the third floor of the Prachuap Khiri Khan Provincial Hall.
The meeting followed directives issued by Governor Sittichai Sawatsan during the Morning Brief on 24 January, where he outlined steps to improve safety for both residents and tourists engaging in water activities.
The governor instructed all agencies to analyse the causes of water-related accidents and develop measures to prevent similar incidents. A proposal was put forward to establish a dedicated incident command centre or tourism board to oversee tourist safety. Officials were also urged to enforce existing laws and regulations related to water safety within their respective jurisdictions.
To strengthen emergency response efforts, the meeting emphasised the need for closer cooperation between government agencies, rescue teams, foundations, and volunteers. Representatives from the 23 local administrative organisations (LAOs) responsible for coastal areas from Hua Hin to Bang Saphan Noi were encouraged to play an active role in implementing these measures.
Authorities also discussed ways to enhance training and emergency response drills for maritime rescue operations. A survey of rescue equipment, tools, and boats available to different agencies is planned to help create an inventory of resources for emergency situations.
The meeting reviewed a draft directive on establishing a Marine Tourist Safety Command Centre under the Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Command. Participants also examined the province’s draft emergency response plan for maritime accidents, which aims to standardise safety protocols and improve coordination among various agencies.
The proposed measures focus on prevention, emergency preparedness, and post-incident management, with the ultimate goal of improving safety standards and protecting lives along Prachuap Khiri Khan’s coastline.
