Prachuap Khiri Khan Province has launched a new initiative aimed at boosting tourism and generating income for the local community through the “Old District, Telling Stories” event on Su Suek Cultural Road. The project, which was officially announced on August 16, 2024, is set to run every Friday and Saturday from August 16 to September 14.
Su Suek Road, located in the Khun Tham Hua Baan Community of Mueang Prachuap Khiri Khan District, is renowned for its street art murals, which reflect the area’s rich cultural history. These murals, created by local artists in 2022, depict various scenes, including the local fishing community, the natural beauty of the area, and significant historical events such as the Battle of Prachuap during World War II.
The event was inaugurated by Mr. Sinat Oa-iem, Deputy Governor of Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, alongside Mrs. Krisana Phaesaengchan, Provincial Culture Officer, and other prominent local officials. The initiative is designed to enhance the tourism potential of Su Suek Cultural Road, stimulate the local economy, and provide residents with opportunities to showcase their cultural heritage.
Throughout the event, Su Suek Road will be transformed with retro-themed decorations. Visitors can explore stalls selling community and cultural products, watch demonstrations of traditional crafts, and enjoy cultural performances. Other activities include Art & Music sessions for youth, street art check-ins, exhibitions on the history of the district, and tours of the Ban Ajarn Kai Museum.
One of the event’s highlights is the vintage costume contest, known as the “Somsamai Awards,” where participants have the chance to win gift vouchers. Additionally, those who visit 10 traditional wisdom booths and collect signatures can exchange them for souvenirs at the Ban Ajarn Kai Community Museum.
To enhance the visitor experience, free motorcycle sidecar services will be available to transport tourists from the Mon Talay Hotel to Su Suek Road. Students from Prachuap Witthayalai School will also be on hand, offering multilingual guidance to assist tourists.
The official opening ceremony of the event is scheduled for Friday, August 23, 2024, at Su Suek Cultural Road. The event is expected to draw both local residents and visitors, offering a unique opportunity to engage with the cultural heritage of Prachuap Khiri Khan Province.
